Description


L'explorateur et scientifique norvégien Fridtjof Nansen, qui a lui-même participé à plusieurs expéditions polaires, fait le compte-rendu des premières expéditions vers l'Arctique, des références à l'Arctique présentés dans la littérature antique grecque jusqu'aux voyages du XVIe siècle en s'appuyant sur de nombreuses sources de première main peu connues qu'il cite. Il questionne également l'histoire basée sur les sagas islandaises. Le premier volume concerne l'Antiquité et le Moyen Âge et traite notamment des premiers voyages des Scandinaves en Islande et au Groenland, ainsi que de la possible découverte du Nord de l'Amérique et du Vinland. Le second volume traite de la découverte du Nord de l'Amérique et des Inuits jusqu'au déclin des colonies au Groenland. Nansen décrit les premières explorations norvégiennes, examine les cartes réalisées par les premiers explorateurs et achève son ouvrage par les découvertes faites par les Portugais.
