The Norwegian explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen, who participates himself to several Arctic expeditions, makes an account on the first Arctic expeditions, from references in Ancient Greek literature to the travel writings of the 16th century. He based his researches on little-known but relevant documents that he quotes. He notably questions the history based on Norse sagas. The first volume concerns Antiquity, Middle Ages and the first journeys of Scandinavians in Iceland, Greenland, possibly North America and Vinland. The second volume continues from the discovery of North America through the explorations of the Inuit to the decline of the settlements in Greenland. He describes early Norwegian explorations, considers the maps available to early explorers, and closes with the discoveries made by the Portuguese.
