Cette monographie commandée en 1671 par le chancelier du royaume de Suède Magnus de La Gardie au Collège des Antiquités suédoises, décrit en 35 chapitres le peuple same et tous les aspects de leur vie : de leur origine, à leur environnement, en passant par leur système politique, leur langue, leur religion, leurs vêtements, leurs habitations, leur nourriture ou encore leurs loisirs. Elle a été réalisée en latin par Johannes Schefferus en 1673 et les rapides traductions de l’ouvrage en anglais, français, allemand et néerlandais sont les preuves de son immense succès.
