This monograph, commissioned in 1671 by the Chancellor of the Kingdom of Sweden Magnus de La Gardie to the College of Swedish Antiquities, describes in 35 chapters the Sami people and all aspects of their life: their origin, their environment, their political system, their language, their religion, their clothes, their homes, their food and their hobbies. It was written in Latin by Johannes Schefferus in 1673, and the translations almost immediate into English, French, German and Dutch proves the considerable success of the work.
