Gesta Danorum (Deeds of the Danes) is an history of Denmark from the origins to the author's times, Saxo Grammaticus (ca. 1200 : scholars estimate that the writting of the entire work is finished between 1208 and 1223); consisting of sixteen latin books (here is analysed the english translation) traditionally divided in two distinct parts (the point of transition may vary depending on the approach). The first one generally includes nine books, dealing with Norse mythology and semi-legendary Danish pagan history, focusing on the deeds of ancient Danish kings and heroes. In the second part (starting from 985), the events and the characters belongs to history: the action takes place in a Christianised world (at least where Danish kings are Christians). Saxo Grammaticus wants to show the greatness of the Danish traditions and history.
