Matthew Henson is an American explorer who accompanied Robert Peary on 7 journeys to the Arctic over a period of 23 years. They affirm that they are the first to have reached the North Pole during their expedition to Greenland in 1908-09. Henson said that he was the first one of their party to reach the pole. "A Negro Explorer at the North Pole" is his memoir. He writes about his arctic explorations. While Peary was honored for their exploit, Henson was ignored during several decades. It is only in 1937 that Henson became the first African American to be made a life member of The Explorers Club.
