Under the pseudonym of Pierre Maël two French authors, Charles Vincent and Charles Causse, wrote, between 1883 and 1904, children's books which were very successful. In line with Jules Verne's "Voyages extraordinaires", this novel, several times republished since its first publication, is one of the most famous of Pierre Maël. At the end of the 19th century, the Polar Star, a steamer armed by Pierre de Kéralio, left Cherbourg in search of the North Pole. On board there is a crew of sailors, all Bretons or Canadians, including a woman, Isabelle, her fiancé, Hubert d'Ermont, and their faithful friend Guerbraz. The story tells of this journey with countless twists and turns.
