The debut novel of Selma Lagerlöf takes place in the small town of Vermland in Sweden where she comes from, in the 1820s. The main character is Gösta Berling, a young Lutheran pastor enslaved to his desires and defrocked for his mischiefs. Saved by the Mistress of Ekeby from freezing to death, he becomes one of her pensioners in her mansion. There he leads a life full of crazy adventures and he is the head of a bunch of partygoers. The writer used a lot of supernatural elements: the style can be compared to magic realism.
