Xavier Marmier was a French intellectual who translated a lot of texts from North Europe. In 1835, he travelled aboard "La Recherche" to Iceland to study Icelandic language and literature. He learned Danish and Icelandic. In 1837, he published "Lettres sur l'Islande" (10 letters), and one year after "Langue et littérature islandaises" and "Histoire de l'Islande depuis sa découverte jusqu'à nos jours". Still aboard "La Recherche", he joined other expeditions and was the official rapporteur. He visited Faeroe Islands, Sweden, Norway, Lapland and Spitzberg.
