Archibald is a teenager living in Shetland, to the north of Scotland. He longs to go to sea : he embarks on the Kate, a whaling ship just parting for Greenland. During a whaling, some problems occur. The occupants of the ship have to jump helpless onto the ice. They are rescued by another whaling ship, the Laplander, but it is also stuck by the ice. After walking a long way over the ice, Archibald and other people come back to the Kate even if herself is beset by ice. However, in spite of all the troubles, the crew manages to come back in Shetland.
