Hans Egede was a Lutheran missionary who embarked to Greenland in 1721 with the consent of Frederick IV of Denmark. He founded the first city of Greenland, Godthåb (today known as the capital Nuuk), started the danish colonisation of Greenland and the Inuit's conversion to Christianity. He was styled the "Apostle of Greenland", studied the language of Greenlanders and translated Christian texts : he is considered as one of the first translater of the Greenlandic language.
