In this collection of five short stories, Karen Blixen (under her pen names "Isak Dinenson") shows the role of destiny in human life. It is the last work put out during the writer's lifetime. In Dykkeren (The Diver) the powerful see inventions and big dreams as future dangerous revolutions. In Babettes gæstebud (Babette's Feat) a brief encounter become a missed opportunity which the character will remembered all life long. In Storme (Tempest) a young girl decided to become an actress after a theatre performance. In Den udødelige historie (The Immortal Story) an old rich trader tries to turn the immortal story of the sailor who was paid to make love into reality. And in Ringen (The Ring) a wife suddenly understands that she was turned away by a man to whom his sheep meant more than her.
