Son of wealthy merchants, Regnard inherited an immense fortune which enabled him to travel in the South of Europe, in Italy, in Alger where he was sold as a slave, in the North until the court of the Swedish King Charles XI. From Sweden, he undertook a journey without much preparation to Lapland. Written in the epistolary form dear to his time, the account of his passage in Lapland and Finland had great echoes in the 18th century, although he had borrowed some of his descriptions from Johannes Schefferus.
