The story takes place in the 1860s in Värmland, the native Swedish province of the Lagerlöf. When the tenant farmer Jan in Skrolycka finds out that his beloved 18-year-old daughter Glory Goldie Sunnycastle is a prositute in Stockholm, he is distraught. Sinking into madness, he takes refuge in a dream world in which he imagines that his daughter is the noble empress of "Portugallien" and he fantasizes himself as the emperor. The author mixes elements from Swedish folklore and the fantasy world with a tragic tone. The novel has been turned into a movie three times.
