The novel is set in the 16th century in Bohuslän, a Swedish province in Götaland. The author tells the story of Scottish mercenary leaders who escape from prison. They kill a family with the aim of stealing the treasure chest of Master Arne, a wealthy priest. Without realizing his identity, Elsalill, Arne's adopted daughter and the only survivor of the drama, falls in love with one of the murderers of her family. Lagerlöf was inspired by a real event, the murder of Mr. Arne at the Solberga rectory on February 15, 1586. The novel has been adapted for the cinema three times.
