Gunnar Hede, a student from Uppsala in Sweden, spends his days playing the violin instead of studying. When he knows that his family estate is in disrepair and that his mother is fighting to try to keep it, he decides to come back home and to forget his music in order to be reasonable. He becomes a breeder, but when his herd of goats is wiped out in winter, Gunnar loses his mind. He travels the region with a violin (stolen from an old man) because music is the only thing that can appease his madness. A young woman will try to save him from his mental illness.
