The account of the Arctic expedition of the Norwegian explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen. The members of the Fram expedition (1893-96) came closer than any previous explorer to the North Pole. The story of their three years journey were written and published as soon as Nansen was back in Norway, in two volumes. In the first part Nansen describes the preparation and equipment (his ship, the Farm, served as an oceanographic-meteorological-biological laboratory), the farewell to Norway and the voyage through the Kara Sea. In the second part, Nansen describes the journey over the ice, setting out with 28 dogs, three sledges and two kayaks, and ends with an account of the return journey. It also includes Captaine Otto Sverdrup's report of the expedition.
