In this fictional adventure novel divided in two parts (The English at the North Pole/ The desert of ice), a rich English inheritor, captain Hatteras, dreams to conquer the North Pole. After few fails, he tries again aboard the ship Forward with doctor Clawbonny and his dog Duk. Jules Verne was inspired by the (real) exploration's reports to the North Pole of John Franklin, René Bellot, Henry Kellett and Emile de Bray.
