"Walden ; or Life in the Woods " est le compte-rendu de l'expérience qu'a vécue l'auteur lorsqu'il a habité durant deux ans, deux mois et deux jours dans une cabane dans le Massachusetts. Thoreau livre de précises observations scientifiques des phénomènes naturels qui l'entourent. Il donne au lecteur à lire ses pensées, le résultats de ses expériences et ses hypothèses. Le livre a des aspects de roman, d'autobiographie, d'article naturaliste et d'un pamphlet contre la société occidentale moderne.
