The novel takes place in Sicily at the end of the 19th century. The story is mainly about the "Antichrist", a copy of the miraculous image of Christ from the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome who performs miracles. The Antichrist is also a symbol of socialism whose relationship to Christianity is central in the novel. Lagerlöf draws heavily on the legends and folk tales of Sicily heard by the author during a trip in Italy.
