This fantasy tale, translated into English as "Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness!", takes place in a small Swedish town at the beginning of the 20th century. On New Year's Eve, Sister Edit, who has tuberculosis, is dying. Her last wish is to see David Holm, an alcoholic and miserable man who contaminated her and whom she always tried in vain to put back on the right track. At the same time, David is ready to become "the coachman of death": the last person to die each year is recruited by Death to travel for the next year picking up the souls of the dead in the Phantom Carriage.
